The Beginning

With the first week of school coming to a close, I think we can all agree on one thing. Change can be difficult. Recently I moved across the United States, leaving my Midwest life for the good ol' college experience. In complete honesty, I don't really know why I am at this college. As of now I have survived all my "1st day" of classes and have found that online classes have more homework. With a busy schedule, I can't help but feel like I am missing some kind of vital information. With the new freshman and the exhausted seniors, I feel complacent. I don't really know my place here yet, but I know that as I continue, I just might.

First, let me introduce myself. I am Kaylei hence the name Daily Kaylei. Or if you'd prefer, Kay is just fine too. Plain and simple. (A lot of people struggle with my name because of the spelling, so for the sake of pleasantries I have gone by my nickname.) Look at that, we are becoming fast friends.

Some fun facts about me, this is my first year on campus. Last fall I attended the same college but online. The price of education is a sucker punch to the spleen. So, I worked full time, I saved, and here I am, finally on campus.

I love hiking, camping, four-wheeling, playing card games, and reading. I dabbled in photography for a while and wrote some short stories.

This past week I made the decision to try something new, no matter how scared I am. I talked my roommate, who I met only last week, into trying out fencing. What better time to try and suck at something new without shame than as a college student. You're only "technically a freshman" once in college, right? unfortunately, every other Freshman had the same idea. I ended up playing a card game with my 5 room-mates instead. I am determined to try again next week.

On campus, I find it funny, that students run around finding their classes some teachers strolling through the library, The cold wind sizing me up. With campus life, I have noted there are roughly the same categories of students as in high school. Only instead of knowing a vast majority... You are lucky to have 4 peers you talk to, let alone become friends with those classmates. I have made a freshman Rules guide. See below.

Freshman ideas

a guide to survive the first year.

  • Get homework done as soon as possible. Work now so you can play later.
  • Try at least one new thing a week. For example: food, art, hobbies, sports, etc.
  • Say Yes to opportunities! With hands open, experience the best life has to offer. (Please note, if something doesn't sit right or you feel uncomfortable, listen to your intuition, saying no is important too.)
  • Try not to eat out often. Create a schedule and see a difference. Definitely go out for fun or as an event to look forward to not because all you have is beans in the pantry.
  • GO TO CLASS
  • Say hi to people. Making friends is hard in college, so be a kind person. You never know who you'll meet.
  • Trust in the process. A positive attitude is important in college. It will work out either for your good or for your experience. But you have to work for it.
  •  Don't do anything that would harm you or anyone else. USE COMMON SENSE AND CRITICAL THINKING, give yourself 10 minutes before jumping into a situation.

By getting involved on campus, you will feel less lonely. Go to seminars, try the activities that the campus plans, live life, and enjoy it!

Alright, I know what you're thinking, easier said than done. But trust me I have a good feeling about this semester. Try it out and if it doesn't work for you, try in different ways. Experiences aren't a one-size-fits-all. So go out there, learn all that you can; become what you want to be. As Elle Woods said in legally blonde, "What like it's hard?"
